Getting older can mean you may have lost some mobility, or are struggling with loss of dexterity. It may be harder to put your bras on, harder to close them, and the underwires may have become irritating. Or, you might suffer from back pain and find you can't stand up as straight as you used to.
This can make it a lot harder just to get dressed in the morning. You can't quite stretch behind you to close your bra. Or you may have trouble fastening the hooks because your hands shake or arthritis has hampered your ability to move your hands and fingers.
I'm not elderly (yet), but a recent experience gave me new appreciation for older (or otherwise not able-bodied) women who struggle just to get their bras on in the morning. I strained something in my right arm. Suddenly, it became difficult to move my arms behind me in order to close my bra. When I did, I got pain shooting up and down my arm. Ouch!
I was able to make do with an old sports bra (which I twisted around — don't do this with a bra you care about!) and an old Chantelle racerback bra that closes in front.
Luckily for me, this was a temporary problem, and it eventually healed. Also, the underwire in the racerback bra didn't bother me.
However, not everyone is that fortunate. If you're disabled or elderly or have arthritis, it's not going to go away (sadly). Happily, there are comfortable bras for seniors that can help address these issues. You can get bras with better back support, larger clasps, front snaps or even zippers. A front closure means no more stretching and straining. The zippers and larger clasps make the bra much easier to fasten, even if you have an injury or poor dexterity.

If you have trouble with your shoulders, you'll be able to put this on without needing help or pulling it around from the back (which would damage the bra). There are two rows of hooks in the front so you can switch to the inner row as the bra stretches from wear.
The straps are padded and designed to reduce strain on your shoulders. Remember though that if the straps on a bra dig into your shoulders, you may need to change your band to a smaller size. The band should support nearly all of the weight of your breasts.

No wires for comfort and no tricky closures either. This bra has a snap front closure so it's easy to fasten. It's also nearly entirely cotton, which means it's super soft, breathable, and comfortable. All of which is great if you have sensitive skin.
The back is wide and high which will help lessen back fat a bit.
It will provide coverage and modesty, but obviously not the same level of lift and support as a standard wired bra. It's probably best as a leisure or working around the house bra if you're larger.

Easy On Front Zipper Sports Bras
Another option is a sports bra. Keep in mind that these are meant to be tighter than standard bras, so you might want to sister-size. The good thing is that you do get a better range of sizes than many of the other bras and they come in bright colors (if you don't just want beige or white).
No wires to make you uncomfortable, and enough support so you can move around without worry. You can even sleep in it if you like (quite a few people bought this for post-surgical use).
The sides and back are high for containment and to minimize spillage. A zip front makes it easy to put on in the morning and remove at night. And the zipper stays up so you don't have to fuss with it all day.
It does seem to run a bit big, so size down.

This is technically a sports bra. However, the front zipper means no fumbling with tiny clasps. You don’t have to reach around your back to put it on either. It’s a good option if you don’t have good dexterity, or if you’ve injured yourself.It also provides excellent support, without any wires to dig into your skin.

ReplyDeleteHi it's hard to give specific brands/models without knowing your size, but you want to look for something with side slings or panels. That will push your tissue forward and out from under your arms. Glamorise 1200 and 1202 might work if you are in their size range (fuller figure).

I looked at your post about high tummy bra's but I want one that is wirefree with a full bust and it would be great if it was front closing. I would use a back closure if the front ones are not available. I usually wear about a 40 c or d. I have tried the Spanx with the front clip but if I bend over my boobs fall out. That is why I want a full bust. I am hoping you can help.

ReplyDeleteThat's a bit of a stumper. I couldn't find everything you want, but here are a few things that are close.
First is the Amoena 1150. It has a back closure, but it's wireless and the center is arched, with a minimal band. It comes in both 40C and 40D, but the bra tends to run small, so order a size up (42C or D). It's intended for mastectomy patients, so it does have pockets, but you don't have to use them. Didn't want to startle you!
Another option is the Goddess Keira Soft Cup GD6093. Back closure, but no wires, and the center is arched, with a minimal band for greater comfort. Goddess is generously sized and designed specifically for fuller figures.
There's also the Vanity Fair 71267 Beauty Back. The front is arched, but it does have a band. No wires to dig into your stomach, but it closes in the back.
Finally, there is also Glamorise 1245 and 9245. These are both wired, but the wire is especially constructed to be more comfortable. Both are bandless and close in the front. This brand is also designed specifically for fuller figures.
